870,961. Electric fluidized bed heating apparatus. SHAWINIGAN CHEMICALS Ltd. July 31, 1959 [Sept. 8, 1958], No. 26274/59. Class 39(3). In fluidized bed apparatus in which an electrode enters the heating chamber above the level of the bed, the point of entry is provided with gas-tight insulation which is shielded from radiant heat from the bed. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, a rubber stopper 17 insulating carbon or graphite electrodes 15 from each other and from a cylinder 10 of temperature resistant glass is shielded from direct radiation of heat from a fluidized bed 11 by a shield 18 mounted on a gas outlet 14 and two shields 19 mounted on the electrodes 15. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 4, a ring 33 of asbestos board insulating the fluidcooled metallic head 30 of a carbon or graphite electrode 28 from the steel cover 21 of a steel shell 20 lined with silicon carbide or high alumina refractory material 22 is shielded by a baffle 29 of the same refractory material. A gas distributer 25 provided with a lead 27 acts as the other electrode. Specification 268,599 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,475,607 and 2,799,640 are referred to.
