The method involves measuring characteristics of multiple base stations (BS1-BS14), using a reference map (RM) for locating the position of an object. The characteristic of a base station characterizes a field transmitted by the base station at the object or a field transmitted by the object at the base station. During an initialization process, a reference map is created which comprises multiple nodes. Each of the nodes is represented by a position and a position assigned characteristic-dependent value. During use of the method, multiple position-finding processes are carried out, by each of which a measured characteristic -dependent value and, from which, a located position of the object, is determined using the preset reference map. The preset reference map is, in each case, updated for some of the positions found, during the updates, the characteristic-dependent values are corrected by a correction term at the nodes of the reference map in a predetermined area surrounding an object position. The correction term depends on the difference between the measured characteristic-dependent value for the respective location, and the characteristic-dependent value at the nodes in the predetermined surrounding area. The characteristic-based locating method uses the fields of Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications(DECT)and/or Wireless Local Area Network(WLAN)and/or a portable radio network for detection. An independent claim is also included for a computer-aided device of a mobile object with the help of a characteristic-based positioning method involves measuring characteristics of a number of base stations, using a reference map for locating a position of an object.
