Laser-based methods and systems for selectively processing or damaging biological target material characterized by an absorptive coefficient in a therapeutic procedure are provided. The lasers typically are fiber lasers. Also, methods and systems which use spectroscopy are provided to selectively diagnose the presence of certain tissue types. One of the methods includes generating an output laser beam along a propagation path. The beam has optical and temporal properties and a predetermined wavelength based on the absorptive coefficient of the target material. The path extends through an opening in a body and into an interior body cavity. The method further includes delivering and focusing the output laser beam into a plurality of spots on the target material for a duration sufficient to allow laser energy to be absorbed by the target material and converted to heat to produce a desired physical change in the target material without causing undesirable changes to adjacent non-target material having an absorptive coefficient different than the target material at the predetermined wavelength. |
