897,318. Plate type heat exchangers. AUSTIN MOTOR CO. Ltd. Aug. 9, 1960 [June 19, 1959], No. 21064/59. Class 64(3) A heat exchanger matrix is connected to associated ducting by at least two resilient diaphragm-like units I, each constituted by a sheet metal frame of rectangular or square shape and having a continuous groove 2 or grooves running generally parallel to its inner or outer margin and being capable of undergoing deflection by forces imposed due to thermal expansion occurring during operation of the heat exchanger. The invention is described in its application to hot gas-air, cross flow or parallel flow plate type heat exchangers. In the cross flow apparatus shown comprising alternating corrugated plates 6 and flat plates 7 stacked to form a block, the resilient diaphragm units 1 are provided for the air ducts where these are connected to the matrix, only the air inlet duct 13 being shown. The inner flanges 4a of the diaphragm units 1 (see also Fig. 3) are welded to the edges of the matrix and the outer flanges of the diaphragm units are each welded to a rectangular frame 11 to which a box-like frame 12 carrying the air duct 13 is bolted. By-passing of the matrix by the hot gas flowing through the duct 14 is prevented by a sealing arrangement comprising corrugated strip members 18 which fit into channel members 19 secured to the outer casing of the heat exchanger. Alternatively a gland filled with a soft packing material may be utilized. |
