<p>A method of decoding a spatial audio signal comprises the following steps. A matrix transform is generated 104 and used to decode a spatial audio signal, using a spherical harmonic representation of sound components having defined direction characteristics, into a set of speaker signals for controlling a set of speakers 140 arranged according to a predefined speaker layout. The matrix transform is generated based on a set of speaker gains, which are themselves based on a predefined speaker layout and a predefined rule, such as a panning rule. The speaker gains are represented as a sum of spherical harmonic components each having an associated coefficient, a value of each of the components is calculated, and the elements of the matrix transform are provided based on the calculated values. This provides a decoding technique which uses an approach in which individual sound sources are reconstructed.</p> |
