PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide azithromycin having a stable monohydrate form and a method for preparing azithromycin in the form of e.g. a stable monohydrate. SOLUTION: The preparation method comprises (i) a step of treating azithromycin with hydrogen boride, (ii) a step of hydrolyzing the formed intermediate boric acid ester compound in the presence of a polyhydroxylated compound and, if desired, (iii) a step of separating the azithromycin compound from the reaction mixture.
