The method involves determining an oxygen concentration in suction pipe (20) as operating characteristics. The calculation of the nitrogen oxide-raw emission takes place as a function of the determined value of the oxygen concentration. The actual nitrogen oxide-concentration is calculated as a function of the actual oxygen concentration and the reference nitrogen oxide-concentration of the nitrogen oxide-raw emission and reference oxygen of the oxygen concentration in suction pipe. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a control device for calculating the nitrogen oxide-raw emission of an internal combustion engine from operating parameters of the internal combustion engine; and (2) a machine-readable computer program for a computer program product.
