In a motor vehicle steering column including an upper steering shaft portion 10 connected to a lower portion (not shown) by a universal joint, a mounting 13 for the bearing 12 of the shaft portion 10 is secured in position with a flange 14 thereon resting on the edge of a surrounding tube 11 by means of a two-part clip 22, 23 engaging a ring 21 which is welded within the tube 11 and does not obstruct the cross-section of the tube sufficiently to prevent withdrawal from the tube of the shaft portion 10 together with a lower bearing 15 and a portion 19 of the universal joint. The clip parts 22, 23 engage the ring 21 by means of lipped flanges 24, 25 and are hinged together by means of tongues (Figs. 4, 5, not shown), about a line 26 diametrical of a central hole for the shaft portion 10. Screws 34 extending through the housing 13 and through slotted holes 33 in the clip parts 22, 23 engage nuts 35 secured against rotation by contact with the clip flanges. Upon release of the screws 34, spring 37 thereon disengage the flanges 24, 25 from the ring 21 and the clip collapses for withdrawal from the tube 11 with the shaft portion 10. Projections 37 on the ring 21 prevent rotation of the clip 22, 23 in the tube 11, and both the ring 21 and the flanges 24, 25 may be grooved to ensure firm seating of the clip. In place of the ring 21, an annular bend may be formed in the tube 11. |
