<PICT:1026940/C4-C5/1> A method of feeding finely divided solid fuel to a gasification chamber in which a high pressure is maintained, comprises accelerating a stream of oxygen to a high speed at low pressure (at 7, 8), feeding the solid fuel under a positive inert gas pressure to mix with the oxygen (at 5), and decelerating the oxygen/fuel mixture and increasing its pressure (at 9, 10) for delivery to the gasification chamber. The initial pressure of the oxygen (at 6) exceeds the gasification pressure, and the final pressure of the oxygen/fuel mixture equals its, whilst the final velocity of the mixture exceeds the speed of flame propagation in the mixture. The parts 7, 8 and 9, 10 comprise respectively a convergent/divergent injector and a convergent/divergent diffuser, and the velocity of the oxygen at 5 may be supersonic and its pressure atmospheric or less. Nitrogen may be employed as the inert gas feed for the fuel. |
