A collection container (100) for biological samples is described. In one embodiment, the collection container includes a receptacle (110) and a lid (120) with a sampling port (130). The sampling port is coupled to an aspiration tube (160) and allows access to the contents of the receptacle. A needle-free fitting (150) allows a mating device to be coupled to the sampling port. A valve (140) automatically closes to prevent the sample from escaping through the sampling port when a mating device is not coupled.
