During manufacture a metal can of circular cross-section is locally preheated before soldering its longitudinal seam, and bowing or buckling of the can due to the heat is sensed by inductance coils disposed in proximity to the path of movement of the can longitudinally along a conveyer and the variation in inductance of the coils is translated into movement of a profile drawing pen recorder. In Fig. 2 (and Fig. 1 (not shown)) a can 1 carried by a conveyer 2 is heated by heaters 3. A lower and middle coil 5 senses the can body seam profile as the can is moved past it while outer coils 5 sense the side profiles. Each coil is connected to a respective detector unit Fig. 3 (not shown) the outputs of which are fed to an amplifier inverter which drives a twin channel pen recorder providing a trace of the profiles. In Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown) each trace (12) represents a can body side profile, and each trace (13) a seam profile and provide an instantaneous visual indication of the seam condition which may be compared with a set of master traces so that adjustment of the heaters 3 can be effected to eliminate deviation therefrom, before a can is passed to the soldering machine. In Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown) the peaks in the traces represent gaps between the can bodies.
