PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an increase in costs for a printing medium and a printer and to distinguish the kind of the printing medium accurately without spoiling user's convenience. SOLUTION: The printer is directed for conveying the printing medium fed onto the conveying route by rotating rollers arranged at the predetermined position of conveying route of the printing medium by driving a conveying motor. The printer includes a load acquisition section for acquiring a conveyance measurement value which shows the load of the conveying motor in the predetermined period when the printing medium is conveyed on the conveying route, a threshold value acquisition section for acquiring a plurality of threshold values established as different values according to at least a kind of the printing medium, and a discrimination section for distinguishing the kind of the printing medium by comparing the conveyance measurement value with the plurality of threshold values.
