PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous ink composition for a ballpoint pen which has satisfactory dry-up resistance and dripping resistance and can develop a performance which is stabilized in the long term even if it is an aqueous ink using a shear-thinning tackifier which can be applied to a writing instrument of a simple structure, and to provide a ballpoint pen containing the same. SOLUTION: The aqueous ink composition for a ballpoint pen at least include a colorant, water, a shear-thinning tackifier, and maltosyltrehalose.
