A battery charging system for use in a road vehicle comprises terminals 11, 12 for connection to a battery 13; a generator 16 for charging the battery; a voltage regulator having a first part 17 which senses the output voltage of the generator and which is connected across the terminals 11, 12 in series with a warning lamp 21 and the ignition switch 14 of the vehicle, the regulator also having a second part 18 which controls the field current and hence the output voltage of the generator and which is connected across the terminals 11, 12 in series with the ignition switch 14; and a switch 22 operable when the generator is producing an output to by-pass the series circuit constituted by the switch 14 and the lamp 21. The switch 22 is normally open, and with ignition switch 14 open no current flows in the circuit; when switch 14 is closed the lamp 21 is initially energized through the part 17 of the regulator and the field winding is also energized so that the generator 16 produces an output whereby switch 22 is closed so that part 17 is connected directly across the battery 13, the lamp 21 being extinguished at the same time. The switch 22 may be a transistor and the voltage regulator may be of the transistor type or of the electro-mechanical type Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). The generator may be an alternator with a rectified output.</p>
