In a teleprinter exchange each input line is connected to a respective buffer which can store only a section of a message. When a buffer is full it is connected to a magnetic tape line group store and is read out to it at higher speed than the buffer input. An identifying code is added to the section in the group store. When an end of message signal is detected its identity is determined. The line group store is reversed and subsequently the start of message signal and routing signals for sections of that identity are read out to establish the connection. When this has been established the store is again reversed to attain the S.O.M. signal, and the complete message read out section by section via a buffer store to the output. Sections appertaining to other messages are passed over. The buffer stores may be core stores and the group store a tape. core, drum or thin film store.
