PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable secure optimization of an image formation parameter not only for a regular image area but also for an isolated dot area so as to properly print, in an image forming apparatus of an electrophotographic system which reproduces intermediate gradation density included in an input image. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a toner density sensor capable of measuring the density of a toner image formed on a photoreceptor, an intermediate transfer body or a printing medium. For an image stabilizing process, first exposure intensity to the photoreceptor is set so that the density of a toner patch pattern in the regular image area matches preset target density (S2). Further, a second exposure intensity to the photoreceptor is set so that the density of a second toner patch pattern in the isolated dot area matches the preset target density (S4). When an output image is formed, the photoreceptor is controlled such that while the regular image area is exposed with the first exposure intensity, the isolated dot area is exposed with the second exposure intensity.
