Hydrocarbon material containing methane is passed through a reactor, in whose top part of which there is optionally a catalyst having activity during oxidation of hydrocarbon material, and through a steam reforming catalyst bed. The catalysts are directly in contact on the side of a membrane which is permeable for oxygen.
