The apparatus (20) has two volume Bragg grating filters (1, 2) for carrying out narrow-band pass filtering operations on an incident beam. A third volume Bragg grating filter (3) filters the scattered beam by reflection to reject the light scattered elastically by a sample (7), while passing the light scattered inelastically by the sample. A fourth volume Bragg grating filter (4) is serially placed behind the third unit for filtering the scattered beam by reflection to again reject the light scattered elastically by the sample, while passing the light scattered inelastically by the sample.
