A float 18 suitable for controlling the operation of a cistern inlet valve comprises a cylindrical skirt 32 formed integral along a diameter thereof with a rectangular guide passage 38 and a rectangular water chamber 36. The skirt is integral with a top wall 34 having openings for the guide passage and the water chamber. In use, during filling of the cistern, the water flows into chamber 36 via passage 42 and weir 54. When the water reaches level 70, the float rises to close the inlet valve (20) via a link connected to lug 28 and a lever. A rectangular guide post (30) co-operates with guide ribs 68 in guide passage 38. During subsequent lowering of the water level after flushing, the level in chamber 36 drops to the level of weir 54. The bevelled edge 56 of the weir is said to prevent the formation of a meniscus. Rotation of the float and guide disengages parts of valve (20). The float can be moulded from polyethylene.</p> |
