A diesel or diesel-like internal combustion engine (1 1) drivably connected to a variable internal compression ratio supercharger (18) that supplies varying amounts of air to the engine responsive to the load requirements of the engine (1 1). The supercharger (18) has a pair of screw rotors (34,38) concurrently driven by the engine (1 1) to move air to the engine (1 1 ). A slide assembly (22) associated with screw rotors (34,38) is movable with a controller (24) relative to the screw rotors (24,38) to bypass air to atmosphere and regulate the amount of air and pressure of the air compressed by the screw rotors (24,38) to the engine (1 1) to increase the engine's efficiency.
