A process for the production of aryl ethers including compounds of the general Formula I in which Ar denotes a mono- or polynuclear, n-valent aromatic radical, Hal represents a fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine atom and n is an integer from 1 to approximately 20, believed to be novel, comprises reacting an alkali metal phenolate with a trihalobenzene in the presence of a strongly polar inert organic solvent, e.g. dimethyl sulphoxide, dimethyl sulphone at elevated temperature. The preparation of 2,3-; 2,5-; 2,6-; and 3,5-dichlorodiphenyl ether, 3,4<SP>1</SP>,5 - trichloro - diphenylether, 3,3<SP>1</SP>,5,5<SP>1</SP> - tetrachloro - diphenyl ether and 2,2 - bis - [4 - (3,5 - dichlorophenoxy) - phenyl]- propane is exemplified. The haloaryl ethers of Formula I are useful as insulating materials for the electrical industry or flame-proofing agents or plasticizers for synthetic materials. |
