A high molecular weight material containing at least one carbon-to-carbon double bond is reacted with a mixture of an alkyl hypohalite and a sulphur, phosphorus, or arsenic containing functional compound at a temperature between -40‹ and 120‹ C. Suitable materials include polybutadiene and styrene-butadiene copolymer or mixture thereof. Suitable functional compounds include ditolyl phosphoric acid, diphenyl phosphorous acid, orthophosphoric acid, phosphorous acid, p-toluene sulphonic acid, ethyl mercaptan, thioacetic acid, dithiobenzoic acid, sulphuric acid, dithioglycol, thioglycollic acid, hydrogen sulphide, arsenic acid and phenyl arsenic acid. Polyfunctional compounds either crosslink the material when the hypohalite is in excess or afford reactive groups to the material. The reaction product of ditolyl phosphoric acid, tertiary butyl hypohalite, and polybutadiene is mixed with polyvinyl chloride to improve the impact resistance thereof.</p> |
