A composition comprises asphalt and a polyurethane prepared by reacting a diisocyanate with a polyhydroxy polymer having an average of at least 1À8 predominantly primary, terminal, allylic hydroxyl groups per molecule and being an addition polymer of 0-75% by weight of a C 2-12 alpha-olefinic monomer and 25-100% of an unsubstituted, 2-substituted or 2,3-disubstituted C 4-12 1,3-diene, the polyhydroxy polymer having a viscosity at 30‹ C. of 5 to 20,000 poises having the majority of its unsaturation in the main carbon chain and a number average M.W. of 400 to 25,000, the polyurethane being uncured or partly cured when combined with the asphalt. Suitable dienes are 1,3-butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, 2-cyano-1,3-butadiene, 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene, 2-phenyl-1,3-butadiene and 2-methyl-3- phenyl-1,3-butadiene and they may be polymerized, suitably in an H 2 O 2 -alcohol, with an alpha-olefin such as styrene, vinyl toluene, methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, acrylic esters, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, vinylidene cyanide and acrylamide. Suitable diisocyanates are the tolylene diisocyanates, 4,41-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, 1,5-naphthalene diisocyanate, phenylene diisocyanates, transvinylene diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, octamethylene diisocyanate and 3,3<SP>1</SP>-dimethoxy- 4,4<SP>1</SP>-biphenyl diisocyanates, beside the polyisocyanates which are the reaction products of a diisocyanate with a polyhydroxy compound and also polyphenylmethane polyisocyanate. Other conventional polyethers and polyesters may be combined with the allyl hydroxyl diene polymers and chain extending agents such as diamines and glycols may be included in the reaction mixture. A one or two-step procedure for preparing the compositions may be adopted provided that the asphalt is added before complete curing of the polyurethane. Sulphur and other conventional vulcanizing agents may be used to cross-link the polymers, which may be blended for co-vulcanization with conventional diene rubbers. Carbon black may also be present. Paving compositions may be prepared by binding sand of “ inch down to 100 mesh A.S.T.M., or a powdered filler such as limestone, sand, silicas, clays, crushed stone, gravel and air-cooled slag (¢-3 inches), or cinder-like aggregates with the asphalt-polyurethane composition. Hydrocarbon oils may be used to give the asphalt composition a workable viscosity. The asphalt may be a mineraloil crude residue having Pen 20-300 (77‹ F.) and may have softening point 225‹ F. Instead of asphalt, coal-tar pitch or asphaltenes may be used with or without chlorinated biphenyl ethers, chlorinated waxes, rosin esters, styrene/ maleic-anhydride esters and amides, or polybutenes.
