PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recorder that achieves desirable image recording by suppressing image deterioration such as color shift or nonuniform density in a joint, which results from sub-head misalignment, and to provide a drive control method. SOLUTION: In a recording head (10) having a structure in which a plurality of sub-heads 12 are arranged, the maximum adjustable amount is subtracted from the sum of the absolute values of the amounts of step differences between recorded images resulting from errors of the sub-heads 12 in the direction of rotation, and the result is divided by the number of steps, thereby deriving a coefficient of adjustment. The amount of step difference is multiplied by the coefficient of adjustment, thereby deriving the amount of adjustment for each sub-head. In the case where the direction of rotation of error when a recording medium is viewed from a head is clockwise, a driving timing is caused to occur later than that for the adjacent sub-head serving as a reference. In the case where the direction of rotation of error is counterclockwise, the driving timing is caused to occur earlier than that for the adjacent sub-head serving as a reference.
