In a method of machining an end face of a rotating disc-like workpiece, means is provided to control the position of the cutting-tool to compensate for axial deflection of the disc and for tool wear during the machining operation. A gauge 21 is radially adjustably mounted, in relation to the axis of rotation of the workpiece, on the cross-slide of the machine, in a position diametrically opposite to the cutting tool 15, the gauge co-operating with a previously machined portion of the disc 9. The gauge 21 is a proximity gauge of the pneumatic type which indicates, due to changes in pressure, variations in the gap between the gauge and the surface of the disc being machined. The pressure signals from the gauge 21 are passed to a summator 23 which in turn controls an electro-hydraulic servo-valve 26 for actuating a piston and cylinder assembly 14 carrying the cutting tool 15. The gauge is supported on an endless belt 17 mounted on the cross-slide 12 so that the gauge and the tool can be maintained in diametrically opposite radial positions relative to the axis of rotation of the disc. The summator operates on a signal differential basis so that when the output from the summator is zero the correct tool position is established. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the electromagnetic servo-valve is omitted and the output from the summator is fed to an hydraulic pneumatic servo-valve (28). |
