A tool changing mechanism comprises a pair of arms 52, 54 oscillatable through 180 degrees and reciprocable by hydraulic means 66 to present a tool 28 to a spindle 24. Each arm has gripper means comprising oppositely movable grippers 56, 58 that include pins that engage in holes in parallel flat faces formed in the flange 32 of the tool shank 26. The flange also includes driving flats for engagement with driving fingers on the spindle. The gripping means and the rotation of the arms are actuated hydraulically by reciprocable piston racks movable between adjustable end stops and engaged by pinions. Limit switches 108, 110 are provided for the grippers 56 or 58 and operation of the mechanism may be programmed automatically. The gripping means of each arm may be actuated independently and the gripping means may be operated in conjunction with an automatic tool loading and unloading device or manually. |
