[Also in Division A5] The invention comprises solid complexes of a herbicidal bipyridylium quaternary salt and 1-4 molecular proportions of a complexing agent which contains an aromatic or heterocyclic nucleus bearing one or more hydroxy, amino or mercapto group, being other than p-phenylene diamine, aniline or hydroquinone. The complexes are prepared by mixing the components in aqueous or alcoholic solution, a solid product crystallizing immediately or on evaporation of the solvent. Complexes prepared in aqueous media often contain water as lattice hydration. Anhydrous products are obtained by drying, e.g., at 100‹ C. Specified complexing agents are p-aminophenol, catechol, phloroglucinol, 3,4- dihydroxybenzoic acid, p-aminobenzoic acid,α- naphthylamine, o - aminobenzenethiol, 2- mercaptopyridine, and 2-mercapto-benzimidazole. Examples relate to complexes of 1,1<SP>1</SP>- dimethyl - 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- bipyridylium dichloride, diphloroglucinate and di-p-nitrophenate, 1,1<SP>1</SP>- di - (2 - hydroxyethyl) - 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- bipyridylium dichloride and 1,1<SP>1 </SP>- di - (3,5 - dimethylmorpholinocarbonylmethyl) - 4,4<SP>1</SP> - bipyridylium dichloride. The complexes possess herbicidal properties.</p> |
