Disclosed is a liquid crystal composition having at least one property from among a high upper temperature limit of the nematic phase and a low minimum temperature of the nematic phase, a low viscosity, a high optical anisotropy, a large negative dielectric anisotropy, a high resistivity, a high stability against UV rays, a high stability against heat and a short helical pitch, or at least two of the properties in a suitable balance. Also disclosed is an AM element having a short response time, a high voltage retention, a high contrast ratio, a long life and little light leakage. Specifically disclosed is a liquid crystal composition having a large negative dielectric anisotropy and comprising a composition having a specific optically active compound as a first component, a specific compound having a large negative dielectric anisotropy as a second component, said liquid crystal compound optionally containing a specific compound having a high upper temperature limit or a low viscosity as a third component, a specific compound which has a negative dielectric anisotropy as a forth component, and a specific optically active compound as a fifth component, and a liquid crystal display element including said composition. |
