The device has magnets e.g. permanent magnets (8) and electromagnets, assigned to one of a down holder (2) and a die (3). An air gap (4) is formed between the down holder and the die. The magnets produce magnetic field in an edge area of the down holder and the die, where the area is turned towards a plate (1) made of ferromagnetic material. A magnetic field sensor (9) detects magnetic field distribution change caused by the plate. An evaluation device evaluates the sensor and determines movement and/or a position of the plate from the detected change. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining position and/or movement of a thin body.
