Production of metal bars of shells using ingot or shell moulds with deadheads with at least one circumference part made of one or several materials having a humidity 3% and a compressability >5%. This deadhead is fixed inp place so that it resists the upward pressure of the molten metal during casting. The molten metal is fed into the mould or shell to a level on the inside of the deadhead so that the deadhead surrounds the upper horizontal surface of the metal. Then the metal is cooled to form the ingot or shell with the deadhead providing a sufficient heat loss rate from the upper part of the metal to keep the part of the metal next to the horizontal upper surface in a molten state, until the main mass of the ingot or shell is in a solid state. This avoids the formation of shrinkage cavities in the mould.
|
