PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain satisfactory optical performance even if vibration occurs due to camera shakes in a variable magnification optical system decreased in thickness direction by bending an optical path. SOLUTION: The variable magnification optical system has a five-group configuration. The first group G<SB>1</SB>includes, in order from the object side, at least one negative lens (e.g., first lens L<SB>1</SB>), a prism 3 for bending the optical path, and at least one positive lens (e.g., second lens L<SB>2</SB>). At least some of lenses composing the third group G<SB>3</SB>fixed to vary power is moved across (e.g., orthogonal to) an optical axis X, thereby correcting a blur of a photographic image, which results from vibration of the variable magnification optical system.
