PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus that easily and precisely determines whether out-of-focus is caused in a distant side or in a close side with respect to a focus position without making its configuration complicated nor increasing its cost and, then, shortens time required for distance estimation, and to provide a method for processing an image. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes: an imaging optical system 11 for generating an astigmatic difference; and a solid-state imaging device 12 for converting a picked-up image formed by the imaging optical system 11 into an electric signal. An image processing section 13 includes a function of detecting the amount of image blur (spread of PSF). The image processing section 13 compares amounts of blur of the image subjected to a filtering process using a blur restoration filter obtained from a point spread function corresponding to arbitrary amounts of defocus equal in forward and backward directions from the focus position of the imaging optical system with respect to image data. Thereby, the image processing section 13 determines whether the focusing of the image matches the focus position or located further in front or rear of this point and estimates the distance of a subject corresponding to the focus position.
