[Also in Divisions C7 and C3] A water-soluble or -dilutable coating composition comprises a hydrophilic, thermosettable phenolic resol or aminoplast resin and a resinous material in salt form obtained by at least partial neutralisation of (i) a carboxyl group-containing adduct of an unsaturated fatty acid or ester and an alpha-beta-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid with (ii) an organic base where Y is methylene to butylene or -GH 2 - NR 1 -CH 2 -; R 1 and R 1 1 are H, CH 3 , C 2 H 5 or CH 2 -CHR 2 -OR 3 ; R 2 and R 2 1 are H, CH 3 or C 2 H 5 ; R 3 and R 3 are H, -(CH 2 -CH 3 - O-) r -H; or -(CH 2 -CH.CH 3 -O) x -H; and x is 0 to 6. (i) and (ii) may be partially condensed and neutralisation completed with ammonia or an organic nitrogen base. Specific bases (ii) are reaction products of polyamines with propylene oxide. In the adduct (i) up to 50% of the fatty acid or ester may be replaced by a resin acid or ester. The composition may contain a pigment and a water miscible organic solvent e.g. an olcohol, ketone or glycol ether or ether-ester and may have a pH below 7 e.g. 6. Numerous suitable materials or reactants for the various ingredients are mentioned. In specific Examples the resoles or aminoplast are derived from formaldehyde and (i) p-t-butyl phenol, (ii) 4,4,-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-valeric acid; (iii) a phenol obtained by alkane reaction of diphenylol propane and sodium chloracetate, and (v) melamine; (iv) is (i) etherified with methanol: the acid resins are (a) a reaction product of linseed oil and maleic acid having an acid number above 300 and (b) a reaction product of soyabean oil, dehydrogenated castor oil, linseed oil and maleic anhydride of acid No. 366, hydrolysed with water and diluted with 2-butoxy-ethanol: and the nitrogen base is N,N,N1,N1,N11-pentakis-(2-hydroxypropyl-)diethylene triamine or N, N, N1, N1, N11, N111-hexakis-(2-hydroxypropyl-)triethylene tetramine; or N,N,N1N1- tetrakis-(2-hydroxypropyl-)ethylene diamine. In Example 6 this last base and acid resin (a) are partially condensed and neutralisation completed with ammonia. Baked coatings The pigmented composition may be applied to the body to be coated by dipping or as a lacquer (in which the aminoplast rather than the phenolic resin should be used) followed by baking e.g. at 150 to 160‹C. In the embodiment illustrated in Example 6 where the acid resin and defined nitrogen base are partially condensed the compositions are usefully applied by electrophoretic deposition, the metallic body being dipped into a bath as anode and a voltage of 70 to 120 volts used.
