PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper separating device and a paper distribution detecting method for detecting the distribution of paper during separating the paper, and to provide an ink jet recording device. SOLUTION: The paper separating device 100 includes a placing table 10 on which sheets are stacked and placed, blowing means 20a-20f' for blowing air from at least one end face of each of the bunched sheets stacked on the placing table 10 to supply the air between the sheets, a light emitting means 50 for emitting light from at least one end face of each of the bunched sheets stacked on the placing table 10, and a light receiving means 60 for receiving the light emitted by the light emitting means 50 after passing through the bunched sheets.
