The engine (1) has a connecting rod provided with eccentrical crank shaft bearings (5-9). The connecting rod is supported on crank shafts for supporting a stroke piston. A lever mechanism acts on the eccentrical crank shaft bearing for transmission of torque and for adjusting the bearings. The lever mechanism has worm wheel segments (22) i.e. globoid worm wheel segments, and a worm shaft (23) that engages in tooth of the segments. The worm shaft is directly driven by bevel wheel transmissions (30), which are driven by electrical motors (27). An independent claim is also included for a method for adjusting compression characteristics in an internal combustion engine.
