<p>1,206,872. 6# - Hydroxy - 7α- methyl - andros - tane compounds. UPJOHN CO. 16 Feb., 1968 [15 March, 1967], No. 7798/68. Heading C2U. Novel steroids of the formulae (wherein R<SP>11</SP> is H or C 1-2 carboxylic acyl; and R is H or C 1-12 alkyl) are prepared by acylating 7α-methyl testosterone or a 17α-R derivative thereof to give the 17-acylate of the corresponding #<SP>3,5</SP>-3-enol ester and reacting this with an organic per acid to give the required #<SP>4</SP>-3- ones containing a 17#-acyloxy group which when required may be catalytically hydrogenated to the ring A saturated compounds. Hydrolysis of the 17-acylates gives the free 17#-ols. The novel 7α-methyl-steroids are stated to possess anabolic, androgenic, progestational, anti-fertility, cholesterol lowering and CNS depressant properties, and they may be made up into therapeutic compositions with suitable carriers.
