In the heat-treatment of a metal article in order to harden one part only of the article, a groove or grooves is or are provided between the said one part and the rest of the article to inhibit heat transfer between the parts. In hardening the teeth of gear-wheels an annular groove 3 may be provided on each face of the wheel radially inwardly of the teeth as shown in Figs. and 2. Alternatively, as shown in Fig.4, axially extending grooves may be provided on both sides of each tooth at the base thereof. Hardening of may be by flame or induction heating followed by quenching. |
