The method involves performing variable pressure-controlled respiration by controlling variation of inspiratory airway pressure (2) from breath. Variation patterns of the inspiratory pressure are determined and regulated based on predetermined distribution of airway volumes by considering actual pressure-volume correlation of a respiratory system. Distribution of the airway volumes with a preselected middle value and a preselected standard deviation is formed by values of the airway volumes. Regulation of application of the pre-selected distribution of the airway volumes is monitored.
