1,223,788. Primary cell. FMC CORP. 21 Nov., 1969 [25 Nov., 1968], No. 56985/69. Heading HIB. A primary electric cell comprises a zinc, zincbase alloy, magnesium or magnesium-base alloy anode and a cathode, e.g. of Pt or C, in contact with a depolarizer which is an ionizable acidified peroxydiphosphate preferably of NH<SP>4</SP>+, K<SP>+</SP>, Li+ or Na<SP>+</SP>. The cells do not need a separator and may be of the deferred action type. The electrodes may be placed directly into a solution of the depolarizer, or a conducting liquid, e.g. water may be added to the solid depolarizer loaded in the cell. When the depolarizer has an unprotonated anion a sufficient amount of an acidic species must be added to form HP 2 O 8 <SP>3-</SP>, H 2 P 2 0 8 <SP>2</SP>- or H 3 P 2 O 8 -. Additives can be used with the depolarizer such as acetylene or carbon black and graphite, binders, oxidation controllers, buffers, catalysts, viscosity modifiers, surfactants, rare earths, mercuric chloride and potassium dichromate. |
