Disclosed is a phosphor which is excited by a blue LED or a near ultraviolet LED, emits visible light and can enhance internal quantum efficiency. The phosphor, which contains an orthorhombic crystal containing Ga and S, is characterized in that, in an XRD pattern using CuKa-ray, the ratio of the diffraction intensity of a maximum peak appearing at a diffraction angle 2?=16.0-18.0 to the diffraction intensity of a maximum peak appearing at a diffraction angle 2?=23.6-24.8 is 0.4 or more.
