The Parent Patent describes a method of power regulation of a pressurised water reactor, using two control rod groups, where the L-group is used only for rapid or large power changes but normally penetrates only to 8-20% of the core depth and therefore has only a small disturbing effect on the axial flux distribution, while the D-group ranges between this depth and 100% penetration and pref. comprises only a few rods, so that it also has little disturbing effect on the axial flux distribution. In the Patent of Addition, when the load is being changed, the depth of penetration of the D-group is kept less than the value required for the load change, the desired change being obtained predominantly by the change in xenon poisoning and to a lesser extent by control rod adjustment and introduction of boric acid or detonate into the water. Radial irregularity in flux distribution is minimised. The reduction in the required rod reactivity or penetration can be up to one-third.
|
