PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device of an internal combustion engine, controlling the air-fuel ratio of a mixture to an optimum value for a start and thereby improving both exhaust gas characteristics and startability when starting a multicylinder engine. SOLUTION: An ECU 2 of the control device 1 of the internal combustion engine 3: controls an air quantity taken in four cylinders #1-#4 during starting of the internal combustion engine 3 so that the cylinder in which fuel is ignited at later timing takes in a smaller air quantity (steps 71, 73); when beginning start of the internal combustion engine 3, performs control for injecting fuel of a first fuel injection quantity TOUTmin to all the cylinders #1-#4 (steps 20-25); after injection of the first fuel injection quantity TOUTmin after beginning start of the internal combustion engine 3, performs control for injecting fuel of a second fuel injection quantity TOUT2nd to all the cylinders and sets the second fuel injection quantity TOUT2nd so that the cylinder in which fuel is ignited at later timing has a smaller total fuel quantity supplied to the cylinder (steps 50-58).
