A colour photographic silver halide lightsensitive material has incorporated in at least one of the photographic light-sensitive emulsion layers and photographic auxiliary layers a homopolymer or copolymer having ultraviolet absorbing and fluorescent brightening properties and having the recurring unit represented by the formula: wherein R o represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, an aryl group having from 6 to 12 carbon atoms, a hydroxyalkyl group having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, an alkoxyalkyl group having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, a sulphoalkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or an alkali metal salt or ammonium salt thereof, R 1 , and R 2 and the same or different, and represent a halogen atom, the group -OR, -SR or -NRR1 wherein R and R1 taken separately are the same or different, and represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, a hydroxyalkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a.sulphoalkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, an alkali metal salt or an ammonium salt thereof, a carboxyalkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, an alkali metal salt or ammonium salt thereof, an aralkyl group having from 7 to 14 carbon atoms, an aryl group having from 6 to 18 carbon atoms, or a cycloalkyl group having from 6 to 10 carbon atoms, R and R1 taken together represent -(CH 2 ) 4 -, -(CH 2 ) 5 -, -(CH 2 ) 2 -O-(CH 2 ) 2 - or -(CH 2 ) 2 -S-(CH 2 ) 2 -, and m represents and alkali metal atom or the ammonium radical. The copolymer defined above also has at least one recurring unit of the formula: -CH 2 -CH(X)- wherein X represents the group -OH, -OCH 3 , -O CH 2 CH 3 , - OCH 2 CH 2 OH, -OCOCH 3 , -OCOCH 2 CH 3 , -OCONH 2 , -OCONHCH 2 OH, -CONH 2 , -CONHCH 3 , -CON(CH 3 ) 2 or -CONZY wherein Z and Y taken together represent -CH 2 CH 2 OCH 2 CH 2 - or -NBD wherein B and D taken together represent -CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CO-, -CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CO or -COCH 2 CH 2 CO-. The polymer preferably has a molecular weight from 20,000 to 1,000,000. Due to their high molecular weight these compounds do not wash out of the material during processing.
