VIII, or a mixture of metallic iron and any of the metals Co, Re, Ru, Us or Mo. The catalyst may be supported on alumina, silica, silicon carbide, active carbon or porous carbon. The catalyst may contain 0.1 to 50% wt alkali metal in a weight ratio to transition metal of 1:100 to 3:1.
