The device (12) has a spring (26) i.e. gas spring, for supporting movement of a rear flap (14) or a door using a drive unit. The drive unit is formed as a spindle drive (16) with a motor, a spindle and a spindle nut, where the drive unit is supported at the flap or the door over a bearing surface (30) of the spring. The bearing surface of the spring has a larger distance from the pivoting axis than a bearing surface (22) of the spindle drive at the flap and the door. A sealing element seals the drive unit that is arranged on a roof (18) of a motor vehicle (10).
