PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain the state of not suppressing the activity of a brain while immobilizing an experimental animal. SOLUTION: The method is for maintaining the lightly anesthetized state of a rat. In this case, the "lightly anesthetized state" is defined as the state wherein the movement of the rat is suppressed but nervous activity is not suppressed. The method includes a process A of measuring the respiration rate of the rat and a process B of administering anesthetic to the rat when the measured respiration rate is roughly below 2 Hz and at least 30 minutes have passed from the previous anesthetic administration.
