PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lifting device which is good in maintainability, designability, and safety. SOLUTION: A lifting box 14 is liftably hung from a fixed surface 10, such as a ceiling, by a lifting cord 12, and an operating cord 16 which makes the lifting box 14 perform a lifting action is suspended from the lifting box 14. A retaining frame 32 which can retain the lifting box 14 on the fixed surface 10 is provided on the fixed surface 10, and the retaining frame 32 includes a locking mechanism 34, 38 which can automatically retain the lifting box 14 on the fixed surface 10 when the lifting box 14 rises to an upper limit position.
