PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus configured to prevent soiling on the back side of a recording material, in forming a frameless image, with a relatively simple configuration. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 100 includes a pre-transfer charging means 30 disposed facing an image carrier 1, on the upstream side of a nip portion N2 in a conveying direction of the recording material P, and on the side opposite to the surface on which a developer image is transferred, of the recording material P to be conveyed to the nip portion. The pre-transfer charging means is configured to charge a developer located in an area on the image carrier corresponding to an area outside each edge part of the recording material at the nip portion, with a polarity opposite to the normal charging polarity, in forming a frameless image.
