PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoelectric encoder excellent in handling and work efficiency. SOLUTION: This photoelectric encoder includes: a scale; a detection head; a plurality of fibers for propagating light irradiated to the scale and reflected light received from the scale; a first cable and a second cable for storing the plurality of fibers inside; and a casing for storing a light source for supplying light into the plurality of fibers and a light receiving element for receiving reflected light propagated through the plurality of fibers and converting the light into an electric signal. The first cable, the second cable and the casing are arranged in the order of propagation through the plurality of fibers, of the reflected light of the light irradiated to the scale. The plurality of fibers are stored in the first cable so that each fiber position is fixed relatively in a direction orthogonal to a longitudinal direction of the fibers, and stored in the second cable so that each fiber position is changed relatively in the direction.
