PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and system for detecting the defect in a weld. SOLUTION: In this method for determining the presence of a defect in a weld by processing the ultrasonic response signals gathered from a plurality of the measuring places set along the weld, the ultrasonic response signals from the respective measuring places are filtered out to form the response signals filtered with respect to the respective measuring places. Thereafter, the ultrasonic energies to the respective measuring places are calculated by using the corresponding filtered responsive signals. Then, the ultrasonic energies to the respective measuring places are compared with the ultrasonic energies of the adjacent measuring places to discriminate a latent defect position. When the ultrasonic energy of the measuring place is smaller than the ultrasonic energy of the adjacent measuring place, the measuring place is the latent defect position. The presence of the defect in the weld is determined by analyzing the fluctuation of the ultrasonic energy in the measuring position in the vicinity of the latent defect position.
